Court Reports & Sentencing Advocacy
Prairie & Path provides comprehensive reports designed to help courts understand the full context of a person's life, circumstances, and functioning. Using comprehensive personal interviews with the defendant, friends and family, and clinical mental health assessments, these reports examine the biological, psychological, social, developmental, and environmental factors that may have contributed to an individual's involvement in the legal system.
A thorough mitigation investigation explores areas such as childhood experiences, trauma history, mental health concerns, neurodevelopmental differences, substance use, family and community influences, educational experiences, medical history, and socioeconomic barriers. By connecting these factors to current functioning and decision-making, the report provides a more complete picture of the individual beyond the charges before the court.
As a trained mitigation specialist, Susan Hurtado, LCSW works as a member of the defense and investigative team, collaborating with attorneys to identify and document relevant mitigating factors. Reports are prepared for use in both pre- and post-adjudication proceedings and are intended to assist judges, prosecutors, and other stakeholders in understanding the individual's history, strengths, challenges, treatment needs, and potential for rehabilitation.
Particular expertise includes the impact of trauma, complex PTSD, neurodivergence, personality-related disorders, substance use, adverse childhood experiences, and other factors that influence behavior and risk. Reports are written in clear, professional language and supported by records review, collateral interviews, and clinical assessment when appropriate.
In addition to report preparation, emotional and case management support is provided to clients and families throughout the legal process, helping them navigate what can often be an overwhelming and emotionally demanding experience.
